“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
Matthew 6:25-27 ESV
Why is it so easy to worry? This is something that sits pretty heavy on my heart because I’m a worrier! I worry about everything, school, friendships, time, my future, etc. And it’s something I absolutely despise about myself, that I can’t seem to stop worrying. In Matthew, Jesus calls all of us worriers out and questions our faith. But yet his words are incredibly comforting. Jesus tells us “do not be anxious about anything”, so why are we still anxious? One thing I heard a few months ago was after you pray about something you shouldn’t worry any more, put it aside and trust that God will help you in whatever it is you are anxious about. The Lord knows your needs and he’s already told us his plans are to prosper us, so why worry. Our faith should replace the worry we hold in our hearts. Jesus will help us and walk with us through everything. When he says do not be anxious, it isn’t a suggestion it’s a statement. Jesus is saying stop worrying and trust me! How can a marriage last if their is no trust? If every time your husband walks out the door, you sit and worry where he is going or if he’s cheating on you, your marriage will fall apart because there is no trust. Same goes with our relationship with Christ, if we are constantly worrying, it shows that we don’t trust him, and just like a marriage with no trust, your relationship with Christ will weaken. Y’all the thing is, Christ is bigger than all our worries, he is the ruler of the heavens and earth! So why don’t we trust him?
Next Jesus reminds us about the birds in the air. He reminds us that the birds don’t toil or harvest for their food. But Jesus still feeds them. And then he says “and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Are you not of more value than they, isn’t that incredible! Jesus feeds the birds, who do no work or harvest and yet we doubt he will take care of us. But we are made in his image and Jesus died for us so our sins would be forgiven. So if he died for us because he loved us so deeply than why do we doubt he will take care of our needs!
Finally he says “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” The answer is, none of us. Being anxious and worried doesn’t add time to your life, it only takes away time. Living our life in worry over the future only shortens our future. So stop and take a minute to trust Jesus and know that he is the king of heaven and earth, he holds the world in his hands, he is forgiving and most important, he is for you!
I love you, even though at times I may doubt you. I know that you are greater than all my worries and anxieties. And I thank you for loving me unconditionally even when I don’t trust you. Thank you for your forgiveness and for walking with me in all that I face. When my heart is anxious, Lord guide my steps and keep your truths near me, helping me set my eyes on your everlasting kingdom.
